As part of our “This Is My Story” Sermon Series, we encourage you to reflect on your faith journey and consider sharing it with others. It’s a chance to articulate your beliefs authentically.
Reflection cards are available at the church near the Sanctuary and outside Alderman Hall. If you choose to participate worship from a remote location, please select a card option to download and print.

Expressing your faith is an opportunity to put in your own words:

Your journey of faith.

What you believe about God and how he is working/has worked in your life.

We encourage you to go through this spiritual exercise, even if you’ve done something similar in the past. Our perspectives change as we continue to mature and grow in our faith and our faith stories will change as well.

This guide will walk you through the four steps of shaping and sharing your faith story.

STEP ONE
Create a Faith Timeline

Creating a faith timeline is an excellent way to reflect on our faith journey.
  1. On a piece of paper, draw a line. Divide that line into segments that each represent five years of your life.
  2. On your timeline, mark the highs and lows in your life including important life milestones like moving out on your own, getting married, the birth of a child, the death of a loved one, etc. You can also include your faith milestones such as baptism and confirmation.
  3. Reflect on where God was at work in these highs and lows, giving thanks to God who works in all circumstances.

STEP TWO
Find Your Focus

Use the timeline and the prompts below to help you choose a specific event or theme in your life that you find especially meaningful in your faith journey. This will be the focus of your story.
Additional prompts to help you find your focus:
  • Can you identify different stages in the growth of your faith? What are they?
  • Tell about a “turning point” in your life and how God was involved.
  • Tell about a time when you felt that God’s will was being made very clear to you.
  • Is there a Scripture passage that has become a “life verse” for you? Why?
  • Have you ever read a book that changed the way you think about God and faith? Why was that book formative for you?
  • Identify a particular ministry/cause/justice issue that stirs your passions and describe why.

STEP THREE
Form Your Faith Story

Below are the different forms of expression you can choose to use:
  • Writing
  • Oration
  • Vision Board – use pictures and words from magazines to create a collage
  • Art in the form of drawing, painting, sculpting, photography, videography, music, etc.
Tip: If you are writing/orating your story, keep it short and to the point, so that it is easily sharable with others. Three to five minutes (about 450-750 words) is a good guideline. If you choose to do something more visual, you can still prepare a short written or oral presentation to go with it.

STEP FOUR
Share Your Faith Story

Why share your faith story?
You may be thinking that your story isn’t special, and no one would benefit from you sharing it. This simply is not true. Sharing your story:
  • Inspires and strengthens the faith of others going through similar circumstances – You will never know how your story might impact someone else until you share it.
  • Creates stronger relationships – It’s true that sharing your story can be intimidating because it puts you in a vulnerable position. But, when we can trust others with our stories and vice versa, we can only grow stronger together.
  • Strengthens your own faith – When sharing your story, you are putting your trust in God which strengthens your faith even more. Seeing God at work in real-time as you share your story with others can also greatly impact on your faith.
Who should you share your faith story with?
You could share it with family members, friends, members of RPC, neighbors, and/or even someone you are not well acquainted with. Listen for God’s prompting and follow his lead! If you are in a small group, we encourage small group members to share your stories with one another as an exercise to build a stronger community.

God calls us to love each other. What better way can we do that then by encouraging and inspiring each other with our stories of faith!
